Heartbreak is a loss - and it deserves to be grieved
Nobody prepares you for how physical heartbreak feels. The feeling of cracking within your chest.
The feeling of emptiness in your stomach. The feeling of your body forgetting how to function.
A divorce after twenty years. A situationship that lasted four. A relationship of one year, or an engagement after two. However it comes - that person is no longer part of your life. And when the person you loved, the person you imagined as part of your future, the person you thought would be part of your life, leaves it - as cliche as it sounds, it's true: you quite literally feel your heart breaking.
In one moment, your whole life feels like nothing it has felt like before, and nothing you thought it would feel like. You grieve the person, the relationship, the bond. The version of yourself you were with them, and the version you now have to become without them. You can't operate the way you normally would, day to day - and how could you? That person was part of your every day.
Whatever the reason - mutual, disrespect, circumstance, the list goes on, and it makes me sad even writing a list of how love can end - fundamentally, it's a loss of someone you never thought you'd lose.
Why heartbreak deserves to be grieved
We live in a culture that rushes past heartbreak. "You'll find someone better." "This is a blessing in disguise." "Time heals all wounds." All well-intentioned. All true, eventually. But none of it makes space for what needs to happen first.
Heartbreak is a loss. And like any loss, it deserves to be grieved - fully, without rushing, without minimising, without being told to get over it before you're ready.
That person, and your chapter with them, brought you to this moment. And this moment can become one of the most pivotal in your life - if you choose to make it so. The truth, both fortunate and unfortunate, is that they were meant to be part of your story for some reason. Whether a page, a chapter, or a whole volume. But the next chapter is yours alone to write - and no one can ever take that away from you. It's something you can never lose.
The aftermath and putting the pieces back together
You're confused about how this happened to the two of you, when you once had something so beautiful. You're recalling only the good memories you shared, when you know there were some less than perfect, because that's what's real. You're processing everything at the same time, feeling the numbness that comes before the tears, and the tears that come before the questions you can't stop asking: how did we get here? Will I ever feel okay again? How do I even make sense of any of this?
I know this feeling intimately.
I felt completely broken, lost and in pain. Every single day, for the first few months. Then those days became regular. Then often. Then sometimes. Then once in a while.
That's what grief does - it doesn't disappear, but it changes shape over time.
Slowly, I started integrating myself into practices that were meant to heal me, and practices I knew would heal me. And bit by bit, I put the pieces of myself back together.
But not in the way you might think. Placing the parts of my heart, my identity, and my life back together didn't mean returning to who I was before. It meant taking the time and space to think about the life I wanted, the person I wanted to be, the truest version of me that has always been within me but I had never met - and aligning myself to that person, every single day.
Because it's only in the moments you are quite literally broken that you are given the chance to do that.
When everything falls apart, something rare happens - you get to rebuild intentionally. Not by accident. Not by returning to old patterns. Not by becoming what's known to you. But by choosing, piece by piece, who you want to become.
It won't look the same as it did before. And that, in itself, is magic.
Giving yourself the space to heal
This is something we thought about deeply when building Therapeia's heartbreak retreat. A place to start putting the pieces of yourself back together. A place to be surrounded by therapists and a community who understands completely where you are. A place to start being guided on your path to lasting healing.
Toward becoming the most whole, bright, and aligned version of who you were always meant to be.
If you're ready to begin that chapter, we'd love to walk it with you.
