Why stepping away is the bravest thing you can do
When someone asks how you are and you say "I'm good" - how much are you actually carrying underneath?
For a long time, the only honest answer I had was: "I'm emotionally exhausted, drained by the demands of daily life, and I need to step away so I can find my way back to myself."
The funny thing is - I felt guilty for even thinking it. And if you're nodding along - you already know what I mean. We're the first to plan a holiday, say yes to an adventure, or show up for someone else's special moment. But when it comes to taking time away to work through the inner pain we've been carrying - we're the last ones we think to show up for.
There are moments when you genuinely can't prioritise yourself, and that is completely understandable. But for the moments that you can, it isn't just a nice-to-have. It's essential. You cannot pour from an empty cup. And yet so many of us keep trying to - and have somehow been taught that doing so is the mark of strength.
What happens when we don't stop?
When we are in the middle of something painful, daily life doesn't pause. The emails keep coming. The people around us still need us. The performance of being okay continues.
And so we cope. We manage. We get through each week and tell ourselves we'll deal with it later. But later rarely comes. And the weight we've been carrying gets heavier.
Unprocessed pain doesn't disappear - it accumulates. It shows up as exhaustion, disconnection, a creeping sense that something is wrong even when everything looks fine from the outside. It shows up as saying "I'm good" when you are anything but.
So what does stepping away actually do?
Here's what I've come to understand: stepping away isn't running from your life. It's running toward yourself.
The demands of daily life are relentless. There is always something that needs your attention, your energy, your presence. And when you are in the middle of something painful - a loss, a transition, a chapter that is breaking you quietly - there is almost no space to actually feel it. To process it. To move through it.
Stepping away creates that space.
Real, intentional space - with structure, with stillness, with practices that help you go inward. To feel what you've been avoiding. To ask the questions you've been too busy to sit with. To give yourself the permission to stop performing.
When you give yourself that space, something shifts. You go home differently. Not fixed - because healing doesn't work like that. But you start to feel like yourself again. Not the version of you that is coping. The version of you that is actually the strongest, truest and brightest one yet. If you've been saying "I'm good" for longer than you can remember, this is for you.
